Jurte @ Hotel Crown, Jan 26
The ski and wine week started with a winery just from the border to Germany. The Baumann Weingut is located in Oberhallau, close to the city Schaffhausen. Ruedi and his son Peter came to visit us in the Jurte and brought some of their highlights. As a Family, Beatrice, Ruedi and Peter produce six grape varieties on eight hectares. A focus they have on the red Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is famous for the fact, that its taste depends a lot on the climate, the soil and the treatment by the winemaker. As a starter Ruedi presented his Müller-Thurgau. The dry and fruity white wine has a decent smell and seems to be perfect as an Apéro. Special is the Pinot Noir Federweisser. A white wine, that is made out of the red Pinot Noir grapes. As the summer was really hot, the 2018 edition comes with a total of 15 % vol. Nevertheless it is not as heavy as it sounds and would be an ideal partner for Fish, Pasta or Seafood.
A really special wine is the “Zwaa”. This wine comes with a history. The winery Meyer, which is only a 10 minute drive away from the Baumann winery also produces a Pinot Noir. Even though the vineyards are so close, the two wines tastes very different. Therefore 20 years ago the two winemakers tried to get the best out of both. The result is the “Zwaa”, which means “two” in Swiss German. This wine has a full body and structure but still a delicate and elegant taste. It therefore is an ideal wine to accompany dinner and is the best sold wine the Baumanns produce.
